Charmaine Merriweather launched HUES in September 2020, which marked one year since the sudden passing of her best friend.
It was during this time that the world was very divided. In an effort to combat it, #DiversifyYourBookshelf started trending on Instagram. That's when Charmaine remembered she and her friend had planned to launch a subscription box together. What if Charmaine used her favorite hobby, reading, to honor her friends' memory? And the world needed to read more diversely anyways.
So she did what any curious book lover would do. She started researching. And what she found was... disappointing. Despite the popularity of book subscriptions, Black Indigeneous and more People of Color (BIPOC) books were only featured approximately 6% of the time in the big name boxes.
The gap was glaring, and the opportunity undeniable. Charmaine decided
to answer the call by creating HUES Book Box.
